Reporting from Harrisburg, PA

Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez travelled the west last month rallying tens of thousands of people across California and some states you wouldn’t think two of the most progressive people in Washington DC would be popular, Montana and Utah.

Now Bernie has taken the fight to the Keystone State, traveling from Philadelphia to Harrisburg and then Bethlehem. You can check out my coverage of the May Day rally in Philly over at Bucks County Beacon.

Bernie was joined on stage with Pittsburg area Congressman Chris Deluzio who won a close-ish reelection in what even the DCCC considered a “vulnerable” seat in 2024. Deluzio is a progressive Democrat who travelled with Bernie at two of his stops in Pennsylvania.

Deluzio called out Harrisburg’s Congressman, Scott Perry. “Now you got a congressman right here, don't you? An insurrectionist, am I right? The guy tried to overthrow our election, who tried to throw out all of your votes and my vote in 2020.” Perry worked hard to overthrow the 2020 election results. The documented attempts are too many to list in this article so just check out this 2023 article in Politico.

Perry, like many Republicans, have not held an in-person town hall or had public appearances since Trump was elected. Deluzio who has help regular in person townhalls, slammed Perry for his cowardice, “Anybody seen him in a town hall? These guys are afraid to hear from their voters. I say this, that's the job. You got to face your constituents.”

Bernie also called out Perry, but for a different reason. The House is trying to push a reconciliation for the budget that would potentially cut $880 billion from Medicaid. Bernie called it “Trump’s big beautiful bill” sarcastically. Perry, who is a former Freedom Caucus leader has claimed “that no one that is legitimately on Medicaid will lose their coverage.” No one claims that there are $880 billion worth of people using Medicaid illegally, not even Trump’s Office of Management and Budget.

Former President Joe Biden looked to support Artificial Intelligence in building the energy infrastructure for the plagiarism robots and Trump gave the industry keys to the government. Bernie was seeing the reality of the situation, billionaires only look out for themselves.

Bernie: Now, think for a moment. These employees, federal government employees, many of them union members, get fired overnight. What do you think Musk and his outlook or friends will do when artificial intelligence and robotics comes to your job? Do you think they're going to say, oh, well, we're going to work out something for you? They're going to throw you right out on the street.

Bernie of course also pushed for campaign finance reform, a popular issue but one that both parties seemed to have just completely given up pretending to care about. Republican’s never have and Democrats announced that they’re looking for their own patronage billionaires.

The Republicans don’t have to search, Elon Musk, the richest c*nt in the world thrust himself on the party, offering literally big checks to voters in Pennsylvania to vote for Trump. Beyond being open about using his $44 billion investment in Twitter as a platform for his right wing views, he also dropped $277 million* on Trump’s reelection. Bernie, meanwhile seems to be the last person in American politics that has a problem with billionaires buying elections.

Think about the fact that Mr. Musk himself contributed $270 million* to get Trump elected. And then. And then for his reward, he becomes the most powerful person in government.

For the final clip, I’m pulling Bernie’s statement on Palestine, which is a more widely critical take than I’ve heard previously. In Harrisburg, Bernie criticized both the Biden and Trump administration, calling the previous administrations policies “terrible,” and connecting it to Trump’s expansion of “Netanyahu war machine” in the “the killing of women and children in Gaza.” Bernie also called out the ridiculous Trump proposal to turn Gaza into a “riviera” for the rich.
